How Canadian Income Tax Works in 2025

Canada uses a progressive tax system — you pay a higher rate only on the portion of your income that falls within each bracket, not on your entire income. Your total tax combines federal tax and your provincial or territorial tax.

What is the Basic Personal Amount?

Every Canadian resident can earn a base amount of income tax-free. For 2025, the federal basic personal amount is $16,129. Each province also has its own basic personal amount applied to provincial tax.

CPP and EI Deductions

In addition to income tax, most employed Canadians contribute to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and pay Employment Insurance (EI) premiums. For 2025, the CPP contribution rate is 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and $71,300. The EI premium rate is 1.64% on insurable earnings up to $65,700.

Marginal vs. Effective Tax Rate

Your marginal tax rate is the rate you pay on your next dollar of income — useful for decisions like RRSP contributions or freelance income. Your effective tax rate is the actual percentage of your total income paid in tax — a more accurate picture of your overall tax burden.
